Material equivalents

4140 is 42CrMo4 (1.7225) in Europe and SCM440 in Japan: near matches, not the same steel. Pick a grade for its designations in each system and its composition limits drawn side by side, so you can see how far apart the “equivalents” are before you substitute one.

Every designation shown is one that two independent stockists or mills agree on. Where they disagree, the page says so rather than picking one.

No composition confirmed by two publishers

Nearest equivalents of 4140, not identical grades: their compositions differ.

Where publishers differ

1020
Lucefin pairs SAE 1020 with C22E (1.1151) rather than C22 (1.0402). One publisher only: JIS S20C (Vulcan).
1045
Lucefin and AZoM pair 1045 with C45E (1.1191), the controlled-sulphur version; Australian stockists list C45 (1.0503) first.
1214
Lucefin pairs 11SMn30 (1.0715) with AISI 1215; the Australian sheets give 1213 and 1215. One publisher only: EN name 11SMn30 (Lucefin).
12L14
One publisher only: EN name 11SMnPb30 (Lucefin).
4140
The AS 1444 limits quoted by Vulcan, Atlas and Milltech Martin Bright differ for C, Si and Mo; the drawing shows only those they share.
4340
JIS: Vulcan gives SNCM439; Swiss Steel and Atlas give SNCM447.
8620
Lucefin marks the 8620 pairing as approximate.
303
Euro Inox and Aalco print different EN phosphorus limits, so phosphorus is not drawn for 1.4305. One publisher only: AS/NZS AS 2837 303 (Interlloy).
304L
Seven of the ten publishers that pair 304L with 1.4307 also list 1.4306 (X2CrNi19-11), the higher-nickel version; the drawing shows both.
316
Outokumpu, Euro Inox, JSSA, Metalcor and Interlloy also list 1.4436 (X3CrNiMo17-13-3), with more molybdenum; the drawing shows it. Acerinox lists 1.4436 as 316L.
316L
All twelve publishers checked pair 316L with 1.4404; several also list 1.4432 and 1.4435. Only Acerinox lists 1.4436 against 316L. One publisher only: AS/NZS AS 2837 316L (Interlloy).
410
Interlloy prints the older DIN name X10Cr13. Euro Inox and Aalco print different EN sulphur limits, so sulphur is not drawn for 1.4006. One publisher only: AS/NZS AS 2837 410 (Interlloy).
420
AISI 420 sets only a carbon minimum, so it spans two EN grades: Atlas and Aalco give 1.4021 (X20Cr13, SUS420J1) alone, Aperam and Valbruna 1.4028 (X30Cr13, SUS420J2) alone, and most list both. The drawing shows 1.4021. Euro Inox and Aalco print different EN sulphur limits, so sulphur is not drawn for 1.4021. One publisher only: AS/NZS AS 2837 420 (Interlloy).
431
One publisher only: AS/NZS AS 2837 431 (Interlloy).
17-4PH
Metalcor, Interlloy, stahlportal, Carpenter and HSM also list 1.4548 (X5CrNiCuNb17-4-4). Publishers print the EN niobium limit three different ways, so niobium is not drawn for 1.4542. One publisher only: AS/NZS AS 2837 630 (Interlloy).
D2
JIS: Proterial, Daido and Otai give SKD11, HSM and Einsal SKD10, and Lucefin SK 10, so none is shown; the drawing shows SKD11. The US publishers print ASTM A681's manganese, silicon and vanadium as ranges or as maximums only, so those are not drawn for D2.
H13
Online Metals rounds ASTM A681's chromium and molybdenum limits and Virgamet prints a higher manganese maximum, so those three are not drawn for AISI H13.
O1
The US publishers differ on ASTM A681's silicon, chromium and sulphur for O1, so those are not drawn. JIS SKS3: Böhler marks the match approximate, and the two SKS3 compositions found disagree, so none is drawn.
P20
EN name: Lucefin, Einsal, Virgamet and HSM give 40CrMnMo7; Dörrenberg gives 40CrMnNiMo8-6-4, the name the European tool steel standard now gives the merged 1.2311, 1.2312 and 1.2738.
A2
The US publishers print ASTM A681's manganese, silicon and sulphur for A2 differently, so those are not drawn.
M2
Alro prints ASTM A681's manganese for M2 differently from Virgamet and Otai, so it is not drawn.
2011
Lead: the Aluminum Association registration, BIKAR and ABRAMS give one limit, Kaiser, Aalco and Alumeco a lower, RoHS-driven one, so lead is not drawn. One publisher only: AS/NZS AS/NZS 1866 2011 (CodeHub contents list).
2024
One publisher only: AS/NZS AS/NZS 1734 Alclad 2024 (Intertek contents list).
5083
Aalco prints a lower EN zinc limit than BIKAR, Alumeco, Color Metal and ABRAMS.
6063
Kaiser's 6063 sheet misprints the silicon minimum, so silicon is drawn for EN AW-6063 only.
6082
UNS A96082: Aalco and thyssenkrupp print the same designation list word for word, so they may share one origin. No JIS designation was found, and the Aluminum Association limits had no second publisher, so only EN AW-6082 is drawn.
C360
Eight publishers pair C36000 with CW603N (CuZn36Pb3). John Hood & Co list CW614N (CuZn39Pb3) against C36000 or C38500; Aalco, Smiths, KME, CDA UK and others pair CW614N with C38500 instead. JIS: ASBW gives C3601 to C3603, Rajhans C3601 and C3602, Source21 C3604, so none is shown.
C932
copper.org and ASTM B505 as Concast quotes it differ on zinc and phosphorus, so neither is drawn for C93200. One publisher only: AS/NZS AS 1565 C93200 (Wisco).
C954
Copper Alloys Ltd and Bronzelube pair C95400 with CC331G; Wisco, Keskipakovalu and Johnson Metall pair CC331G with C95200, and CC331G's aluminium and iron limits sit below C95400's, as the drawing shows. An approximate match at best.
C630
Holme Dodsworth, Righton Blackburns and London Bronze pair CW307G with C63200 rather than C63000. One publisher only: JIS C6301 (Wieland Diversified).
Ti grade 2
Rolled Alloys prints only 3.7034, the German aerospace number for the same grade. Publishers differ on hydrogen and carbon for ASTM B348 bar, so neither is drawn for it.
Ti-6Al-4V
3.7164 is the aerospace number for the same alloy (TIMET, Zapp, Rolled Alloys). Only one publisher prints the JIS hydrogen limit, so it is not drawn.

Can I substitute an equivalent grade?

Only after checking what the part needs. Equivalent grades come from different standards with their own composition limits, so they overlap rather than match: 34CrNiMo6 carries about twice the chromium of 4340 and less carbon, and the European C45E allows a lower manganese than SAE 1045. Order to the standard the drawing calls up, and treat an equivalent as a starting point for a substitution request, not a like-for-like swap.
